A Pair of Transitional Braies

Alright!  This project has been finished for well over a year, but I haven't actually worn it until recently.  I also had not written any documentation on the subject--or any other projects in the last year or two, for that matter.  I'm well out of practice in writing, and working from scanty notes and memory, so please bear with me.

Introduction:

As I have been working on a 14th century outfit (slowly), and intend to venture into the early 15th century, I needed an actual set of braies instead of the wrapped loincloth style hypothosized over on the Hibernaatiopesäke blog.  While comfortable and of a period form, I didn't feel they would be appropriate for later in the 14th century, never mind the 15th.  Therefore the first part project was to figure out what shape the braies would be, then make a pair which would work for a variety of outfits.

Featured Garment: The Bedford Hours Ark

It's been a while since I decided to do a medieval Featured Garment--I really should do more in my main--SCA--period...

This week, we are taking a look at one of the pages in the Bedford Hours--a beautifully illuminated manuscript from the early 15th century (1410-30).  The Bedford Hours, more formally known as Book of Hours of the Use of Paris was produced sometime during these dates, with the book possibly being worked on for over a decade, and being added on to.  Some of the important inclusions to the book are: the Calendar, excepts from the Gospel and prayers to the Virgin, Psalms and more prayers, the hours, and a "cycle" of miniatures from Genesis--the last being the source of the Ark image.

Research Dump: No 9

Well, that was...fun.  I realized it has been over a year since I assembled a research dump--shame on me.  Even so, there aren't a massive quantity of links, since I haven't been doing true research and reading of academic papers for some time.

This collection covers a wide variety, but are mostly clothing and textile of a variety of periods, including Ottoman Turkish, 18th century, and high medieval.

Featured Garment(s): Two 15th Century Pilgrims

The chosen garments this week are those of the two Pilgrims on Folio 102r, in Le Livre des faiz monseigneur St. Loys.  The manuscript is about St. Loius--and importantly, his family--, and includes actual historical items, and accounts of miracles and such.  It was commissioned by the Cardinal Charles de Bourbon for one of his sisters-in-law (we do not know which one).  The current dating--exact date is unknown--of the manuscript is assumed to be the late 1470s, very beginning of the 1480s, based on the clothing and the prologue stating who it would be given to [Hoover.  Pp. 10].  Read the Hoover text for more information.

I found this interesting not as much for the clothing, which is fairly standard pilgrims clothing for the period, but for the detail of the accouterments--of the accessories.
